Brooklyn Street renamed after decorated cop shot during 2011 robbery

A Brooklyn street was officially renamed Sunday in honor of a decorated cop shot by a violent criminal during a botched robbery 13 years ago.

Officer Peter Figoski, a 47-year-old single father of four daughterswas fatally shot in the face on December 12, 2011, by a ruthless ex-con who was hunting for drugs in a Brooklyn apartment, authorities said at the time.

On Sunday, hundreds of current and former NYPD officers joined his family, police officers and local politicians outside the 75th Precinct on Sutter Ave to commemorate his service – and his sacrifice.

“It’s been a long time coming, but East New York is finally getting what it deserves: a street named after a true hero,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said at the ceremony, which named the corner of Linwood Street and Sutter Avenue “Det. Peter J. Figoski Road.”

One of Figoski’s daughters, Caroline O’Callaghan, said the family was forever changed by the loss of the 22-year veteran of New York’s Finest.

“At the time, the NYPD said they would never forget,” O’Callaghan said. “And now (13 years later) they kept their promise.

“I am glad that our father’s heroic deeds will never be forgotten.”

The criminal who killed him – Lamont Pride, then 27 years old – jumped from a broom closet in the basement of a Cypress Hills building and immediately opened fire, hitting Figoski in the face as he tried to offer support to fellow officers during a drug den robbery gone bad.

Figoski’s daughters later told The Post that their father texted them every night — including the last one — at 10:30 p.m. that said, “I love you.”

Maddrey thanked Councilman Chris Banks, a Democrat who represents several southern Brooklyn neighborhoods, for renaming the street more than a decade after the tragedy.

And he told the younger officers — many of whom never worked with Figoski — that it is “now their duty to carry on Figoski’s legacy.”

The fallen officer’s mother, Maryann, thanked the department and city for their work.

“Today was a beautiful ceremony, they did a fantastic job,” she said. “I appreciate that they remember Peter.”
