Former activist arrested for drug possession after police chase from Trussville to Tarrant

A 40-year-old man is in custody after a police chase that started in Trussville and ended with a minor crash in Tarrant.

The chase happened late Monday morning on Interstate 59 near the 141 mile marker.

Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush said officers tried to stop the driver for traffic violations, but he refused and the pursuit began.

It ended at Alabama 79 in Tarrant. Rush said a minor collision occurred between the driver’s vehicle and a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office cruiser.

Several agencies helped.

Mercutio Terrell Southall, a former well-known community activist, is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and attempted eluding.

The chief said Southall was taken to the hospital to be evaluated as a precaution. No one else was injured.
