Does Iowa’s attorney general think the election is ‘safe and secure’?

DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa State Capitol Bureau) – Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird told Gray Media Iowa she believes in her state’s election system, but did not express that confidence to the rest of the country.

“Here in Iowa, I think we have good election integrity,” Bird said. “We have a secretary of state, accountants and pollsters… people who are doing a good job of ensuring election integrity. We show IDs to vote. So I feel good about our system here in Iowa and how it works.”

Last year, Bird became the only Republican official in the entire state to endorse Donald Trump for president before the Iowa Caucuses, and he has remained a vocal supporter.

Trump has been claiming for years that fraud is the reason Hillary Clinton received more votes than in 2016 (he still won the Electoral College) and why Joe Biden defeated him in 2020 (Trump lost both the popular vote and the Electoral College).

Trump has failed to convince the courts, Republican-led investigations in several states and Congress that there was widespread fraud in the election.

Does Bird believe the country’s elections are secure?

“It’s hard to say, you know, some states don’t even have a voter ID, and I don’t think there’s a good reason for a state not to have a voter ID,” Bird said.

The National Conference of State Legislatures reported that 36 states have laws requiring or recommending voter identification. See that list here.
