Reasonable thrust is also provided by the single front-mounted E5 engine, which produces 183 hp and 340 Nm of torque. Although it’s not a performance car, this family-friendly electric vehicle accelerates from 0-100 km/h in a solid 7.2 seconds, which should be enough for a quick commute to school.

If you know anything about electric SUVs, you might notice one thing about all these numbers, and that’s that they’re better described as adequate rather than class-leading. Among such a large pool of rivals, the E5 is also a bit typical when it comes to exterior design, although at least it’s pleasing to the eye. With a starting price just north of £33,000, Omoda’s debut electric vehicle certainly isn’t the cheapest SUV on the market either, but the brand is offering some attractive PCP deals to counter this issue.

As for the onboard kit, everything is simple and you can choose from only two trim levels; Comfort and nobility. The base Comfort model is also quite well equipped, with LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless device charging and a reversing camera.

For around £1,500 more, the Noble trim level adds electronically adjustable front seats, a power tailgate, a sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera and an eight-speaker Sony stereo system.

There’s only one battery at the heart of the Omoda E5, and that’s a 61.1 kWh unit that officially achieves 257 on the WLTP combined cycle, regardless of trim level.
